That would work (i'm assuming the other machine is a windows one?). I
had my network setup like that for a while. You don't even need a hub
if your just connecting the two. Sharing the net connection shouldn't
be a problem, from what I remember you turn on internet connection
sharing in windows, then tell linux to use your windows machine as
the default gateway.
It's a good option until you can get the router working natively.
