Until recently I was using KDE with Mandrake but have ditched Mandrake
in favour of Debian 3.1 and KDE 3.3 is like a fruit machine, all
colourful buttons and things flying about! 

So my son uses KDE and I use GNOME, I bet you can't set a windows
machine up with such a split personality?
