That's interesting - I've come across similar problems in my own endeavours - I used a CDDB when encoding one of my CDs and it had some non-ascii characters. When I then came to do some bash stuff with the files I had to rename the files.
I found this really disappointing in all honesty - given that linux feels much more multi-national than windows is.
... And I still can't get AltGr+e to do é (e acute) in Linux.
