Well that's the amusing thing - Fedora and my scanner *did* work without 
fussing, out of the box no less, but then stopped working with just as 
little fanfare!

At times like this I am thankful for my windows dual boot (I think 
that's the first time I've booted the machine into Window almos a year 
:) - the last occasion being trying to get my pc to communicate to my 
phone via the usb cable.
