So did I but it seems there is something about my setup that the Gnome version
of Ubuntu - and Debian - is unable to resolve, since everything works ok with
KDE and Xfce

Email, web browser, apt, synaptic all come with a message similar to "Unable
to access network" or "Network does not exist" or "URL does not exist". I
have tried every trick I know and a few more that listers passed on to me but
nothing seems to solve the problem. The whole thing was installed via
internet with 'netinstall' using a D-Link modem router. Gnome Network Manager
confirms my connection and assures me it is working, Ping finds everything I
ask it to, /etc/resolv.conf appears to be ok. I gave up in the end. Gnome is
not exactly my favourite desktop although I could get used to it.

Have not had any problems with Xubuntu, which is supposedly Ubuntu with the
Xfce desktop which is clean, tidy and lightweight.
