Hi,
At Monday's meeting we worked out ideas about future meetings. Here is a
summary:
"Future Slug Meetings
Aims
We want to see new people join the group, and we need to structure the
meetings to appeal to people who know little of Linux. We need to generate
publicity. Finally we want to retain the convivial side of our meetings.
Name
We wanted to get away from the SLUG name for 2 reasons. First, while we
remain part of SLUG, we accept that many members (some doing the most
important work), cannot come regularly to meetings. Second, this has been a
rainy summer, producing record numbers of slugs, and some do not like that.
We agreed that they should be called SLG (Scarborough Linux Group) meetings.
Structure, Date, Place and Time
We decided that we should split the meetings in two. A meeting for elementary
topics called the Linux meeting, and another meeting for conviviality called
the social meeting. The Linux meeting will be at 7.15pm on the first Monday
of every month at the Blind centre in Dean Road. The social meeting will be
at 7.45pm on the third Monday of each month at The Valley. The Linux meeting
would take the form of a half hour talk on a topic announced in advance,
followed by a half hour plus left for questions, discussion and whatever
those who come want to do. In fact the next meeting will be a social
meeting on Monday 15th October at the Valley.
Distributions
We would like to set up a list of distributions, contributed by people with
experience, and who are happy to answer questions about them. It could
include information on: ease of installation, specifications needed, and
suitability for beginners.
Poster
We want to create an A4 poster, that would publicise the Linux meetings in the
library, and local schools."
Some more details will follow. Comments, suggestions and objections are
welcome.
Bob
