Judging by <http://www.nongnu.org/dvdrtools/>, dvdrecord is a fork of
cdrecord from cdrtools. As such, I would expect it to be able to write CD-Rs
as well as DVD[+|-]R[W|AM]s.

But then, I haven't got a DVD writer.
