[sclug] Playing quicktime 6.1 using xanim

I'm preparing a presentation where I want to combine some jpgs, gifs and
quicktime 6.1 files which are very short animations. 

xanim would be an ideal tool for this, except the quicktime format seems
too recent for it.

I can play the quicktime using mplayer, but otherwise the interface is
horrible for looping, and frame control.

Is there any way of getting a newer codec used in xanim, or using
mplayer to convert the quicktimes to an earlier version that xanim
understands, or something like an animated gif? The mplayer
documentation is extensive, but little help.
