[sclug] Computer auctions

I've bought quite a bit of kit over the past year. IMHO the trick is
to wait and see. For the Rivermead auction I get the list in the post
(Regular Customer :-). I browse though it and see what I might be
interested in. Then on the morning get there at 9ish for the one hour
preview. Decide if the items look any good. You can get the systems
powered on if you want. Then note down the price to bid too. At
Rivermead you have to add VAT and 10% buys fee. So you pay a fair bit
more than the bid price.
I bought a couple of Compaq PII at 7 quid each. The previous month they
were going for 20 quid. I seen them go for 20 quid since too. The
price for item can vary greatly on the day too. I'm not sure prices
drop as the auction goes on and people leave.
On one occasion there were a number of nice PIII systems I'd put a bid
price of 100 on them and only wanted one. I think only one other person
was bidding on them and they all went for more than my max bid. My
guess is if he had let me have one for 80 quid he would have got the
rest for 80 quid too. :-)

There are 10 sorts of people.
Those that understand binary and those that don't!
