[sclug] compiling programs

first off does anybody know of a good idiots guide to automaker/autoconfig
because im getting lost in the manuals.
secondly has anybody tried to compile the latest version of celestia on a
debian woody 3.1 system because ive been having lot of problems with the
qt-mt version which i think ive sorted by getting the latest version from
troltech and compiling it but now it fails on the kde headers and i have a
felling that these problems are linked? If i try to use the gtk compiling
option it complains about the jpeg decompression which doesn't fail if i use
the kde option
so im completely stuck and any help would be great
