Thanks for the post.

| I installed Fedora core 2 and found the rumours that

I have not been impressed with much of Fedora but for no particular
single reason I can give you, just an overall impression.

| I had enough minor problems to ditch it and return to RedHat 9.

In the longer term this does need addressing. You know that security
updates will be the first problem in doing that.

| However, I did take a copy of /boot and was about to give it ago when

Yes. Worrying stuff is it not people? The kernel developers in favour of
this approach are of the opinion that their vendor will go sort it all
out for them because they have been doing that for ages anyway. That is
actually a sane idea on the desktop and server machines out there
running RedHat and friends but nicely buggers up things for those of us
folks maintaining our own embedded environments for small devices.

| Since I prefer to get my excitement outside of kernel hacking
| I have decided to stay away from 2.6

Oh I find it quite fun, but I prefer the concept of the former model.
While it is true that things were never in reality so rosey (which is
why the official policy got changed), I think this new idea sucks donkey
nads and needs changing. But then it's not my call.

I did go to OLS and did mention this issue during Andrew's keynote
(always good to get the audience motivated on these things) but he
assures me that everything will be ok because there will probably be
2.6.blah-post releases which are known to be stable.

Read my rant in this months' Small World column in Linux User if you
want a drawn out version of my views.

Jon.
