Hmmmmm. Yes, you've got a point there. I should read my own post more
carefully. The source to Sun's JDK isn't available of course, though
there are a couple of alternatives in Portage (ibm, blackdown and
(currently masked) compaq).

All I can say about it is that I have Sun's jdk installed and Java
plugins work fine in Moz for me ;) I just went and found a page to check
it incase I was going nuts, and it does work.
I have:
gcc version 3.2.3 20030422 (Gentoo Linux 1.4 3.2.3-r3, propolice)
dev-java/sun-jdk-1.4.2.03
net-www/mozilla-1.6
Incidentally, I wasn't trying to start an argument over distros, just
performing a bit of grass roots PR ;) I have Debian systems here too, I
just like the Gentoo ones more.
