Dunno if you saw the news this week but google just released a cross
platform voip and chat application. Chat is based on jabber so
apparently you can use existing jabber client (e.g. kopete).

I think the underlying technlogy for google talk is SIP. I signed up
to sipgate once - you can buy a dedicated hardware handset and you get
an incoming landline number so can essentially replace a bt phone line.

They have Reading numbers available and calls pc to pc and incoming
are free. Calls to cell and landline are at competitive rates.
