As an aside, I'm sure power cuts are becoming much more frequent than they
used to be 20 years or so ago.
I got fed up of them and bought a UPS about 2.5 years ago. Only problem
was I found the batteries were duff recently; although the UPS checks them
every 14 days, these had a weird problem where they worked perfectly for
about a minute, then conked out. Goes to show you have to properly test
them, every so often.
[As another aside, the UPS logs the voltage on the incoming supply every
few minutes - it's amazing how much variation there is -- I've had up to
257VAC!]
