A few years ago, a flatmate of mine at the time played with Motion using
IIRC a camcorder wired up to his TV card inputs. Had a fair few hours of
fun playing with what it could and couldn't realistically detect. ISTR
all it wanted was a Video4Linux device.

If you're wanting this for security applications, there's also
ZoneMinder; http://www.zoneminder.com/ which appears to be dedicated to
the task.
