I did suggest that i am no way an expert - although not having a clue
would have been more apt :)

I am very far from a widescreen (17inch crt). It was a rather silly
o'clock attempt to gnudge gnome into stepping up more then 1024x768.

Seems that no matter which way i try (have run dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xfree86 near on 20 times) - gnome just won't budge.
