I've made some progress, but using gnugk - adapting the config I found
at http://content.ix2.net/arc/t-3526.html at least allows my clients to
connect to the gatekeeper.  I'll test out external connection this
weekend.  Thanks for your suggestion though - if I can't get gnugk to
work properly I'll follow your ideas through...
