I switched to Ubuntu from Mandrake 10.1 a few weeks ago. For general desktop stuff it's very good especially if you enable all the repositories and soup it up with Automatix. I haven't had to compile anything from source yet. It even runs more or less acceptably on a 350Mhz 288MB Pentium II.
I had problems burning a DVD in K3B - the progress dialog just sat there marking time whilst nothing happened. Turned out that there was some kind of SCSI error that I could work around by forcing DAO mode instead of "Auto" in the burn options. Is that what you're experiencing?
I won't upgrade to edgy until the final release - about three days from now - but they did post a release candidate (not a beta) on Friday.
