Perhaps you can do something with your own javascript and
WWW::Mechanize to simulate that behaviour. I'd not use gmail or any
other web based software for email because it's just slower to get to.
Sylpheed-claws uses a lot less RAM than firefox also.

Perhaps browser exploits might become a target through email also?
