Ah! [penny drops]. Thinks ... doesn't that means that getmail, dovecot
and whatever delivers system mail have to agree on and correctly
implement a locking scheme, with the prize for getting it wrong being a
screwed inbox? I don't even know what the system mail delivery agent is:
I'd guess exim since that's installed, and I'd hope that programs that
generate system mail wouldn't try to deliver it directly.

Getting me thinking that what I really need is to get exim to deliver to
~/Maildir rather than mbox I had a prod around in /etc/exim4
and found /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf which suggested I run
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. Did that, changed the "deliver to mbox or
Maildir?" option and - ta daa - system mail to my maildir. How hard was
that? :-)

TBH I've never used IRC. I've just fired up ksirc (first app with 'irc'
in the name I came to :-)) and will have a lurk see if I can get the
hang of it.
