Thanks for the advice. I've glugged some single malt to steel myself, and
done a little more investigating. I found by trial and error that I could
get it to work with no security and then with WEP, but not with WPA or WPA2.
I'm not sure why this is. I don't really want to settle for WEP but at least
that works. Maybe I'll try the wicd front end. Where is it available from
(it doesn't appear to be in the Jaunty repositories)?


Answers to other questions - I did a clean install of 9.04 from the Linux
Format DVD (April, I think), having formatted all partitions except /home.
Then I updated the apt sources and did an apt-get update. The reason I
skipped 8.04 (which was plan B) is that that doesn't make the nvidia
hardware acceleration driver available, so it gives me crappily sluggish
screens. 9.04 at least allows me to download the proprietary driver, if only
after a stern ticking off for wanting it, mind :-)
