With age, my hearing has lost a lot of high frequency response, so the
frequencies at the top of my (limited) range are pretty important. As
long as fidelity is fair and with little distortion, then I find mp3
and the natural characteristics of small ear phones useful, if not
very good.

Going further along the curve towards even more cheap and cheerful,
then if conversion is poor, then limited hearing capability means the
end experience is bad.
