Try different machines with different sound cards.
Aim for 80% on the mixer levels, more is overdriven, less is hiss,
background hum
Consider running X11 remotely, or diskless NFS, to avoid CPU noises,
footsteps to needle,
Cable probably looks like: (1M or 5M)
