What about using xml/html? Its fairly well supported thanks to that internet thing. I'm not sure how well word deals with this, but I know it used to be able to export to html.  Open office can do html and some word format, so that would bridge the gap between OO and Word, and it would also make a transition to web page fairly easy I imagine.
