All external modems that use the serial port are Linux compatible.

USB modems are supposed to use the Communication Device Class (CDC)  
specification and usually the Abstract Control Model (ACM) sub-class. If
they do, then Linux will support them.  If they don't, then chances are
Linux doesn't support them.
