I thought that you were using SuSE 8.1?  Anyway the ftape/zftape module has 
been part of the SuSE distribution since at least 6.3.  I have only used it 
(years ago) with an internal Colorado streamer, and did not think that the 
parallel port devices worked reliably under any o.s.
