[Scottish] TV Card/Video Capture/Encoding

Hi Folks

I inherited a TV card from a friend. It is a bt878 chipset, which is supported 
under linux. I used xawtv to hook it up to my video camera, and i can see the 
picture (although in Black & White). It captures to AVI file.

Can anyone recommend any good sites for guides under linux?

Also any software recommendations for watching avi, and encoding from avi to 
mpg, for vcd and svcd purposes.

Any help much appreciated. Sorry for the vagueness, I dont know an awful lot 
about them.
