One word (in my case), Windows :)  The SpeedStep stuff is enabled to
throttle the CPU back from 700MHz to 550MHz when on battery, but in any
case, the Vaio Z600 which I have has a very effective fan and exhaust which
I think is under BIOS control, not OS control.
