 Dear All - I *did* RTFM - amused condescension or open scorn are not necessary...

I thank you all for your time and your help - 

I had a buggy UBU CD - such things *might* actually occur now and then...

(I think the inflexible BIOS is just a coincidence, but, as I've said, the system *has* apparently updated itself - now to see if it functions!)
