If the kernel module is loaded
“lsmod | grep mulitouch”
 then it's down to the windowing and desktop installation.  

For me with Xorg-X11 multitouch works with KDE-Pasma 5, IceWM, and Openbox.  Gestures only with Plasma 5.  I do not have Gnome. When I last tried Wayland, multitouch was not supported.

The same is true for both a Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro and Acer C720P (chromebook).
