Hi Chris, I'm very much a newbie, but might be able to help here. I have =
a set top ntl box which just connects via at 10mbit Ethernet link =
(Straight I think)

When I first installed SUSE 8 I spent about 2 or 3 hours hunting on the =
net for info on how to connect to NTL but could find nothing!

The reason, I found nothing was when I powered up the machine, opened a =
web browser, it came up with the NTL logon page! You just need to set =
your network card for DHCP, reboot, and then you create an "account" =
following the NTL instructions. When finished you have to close your =
machine, take off power from your set top box for a minimum (a real =
minimum) of 30 seconds. Plug in set top box, wait until middle light has =
turned steady, reboot machine, and hey presto NTL broadband.

A couple of warnings though.

1 NTL registration servers are up and down like a yoyo. (As are NTL news =
servers)

2 You may need several attempts. If in doubt, do a re-boot as above.

3. If you change your network card or put on another machine it will ask =
you to go through the registration again because it works on MAC =
addresses (Unique hardcoded number on network card)

The pop is pop.ntlworld.com
smtp is smtp.ntlworld.com
and news is news.cable.ntlworld.com (not reliable at all)

Your account name is the bit before the @ symbol.

Let me know if this helps, and have fun

Tony

Subject: [Sderby] Hello to All from new member Chris with ntl Cable =
Modem prob

Hi Linux peeps - new member Chris here. I've been running MD 8.2 =
since around April. It's the first distribution that worked 'out of the =
box' for me, but (shock!, horror!) I've had to go back to Windoze due to =
this cable modem. Inevitably, ntl supports Windoze, so it's made to run =
as part of the install. When I switch to MadDuck, though, it recognises =
the modem as a usb modem, but requests drivers. That's great - there are =
none anywhere!! Nothing on the mfrs website (it's an Ambit 351000, =
badged as an ntl:home 100), nor from ntl. Prodigious websearches have =
produced nothing. Dear ol' ntl have taken down my dial-up account , so =
I have no net access in MD :-(

Has anyone succeeded in getting this modem running in a Red Hat based =
distro? If so, a few pointers would be really appreciated. Thanks in =
anticipation

  Chris
