Dear Linux lovers; 03.09.02

Hi, I'm Weaver and live in sunny North Queensland. I've just got off a si=
te
where a German guy put Mankrake on a laptop just like mine which is a Del=
l
8200. I've emailed him a dozen times...no resonse. Well I've managed to p=
ut
Mandrake on but of course can't get the Gforce4 440 card to work. I've sp=
ent
about a month in the library (as I live on a small boat) trawling the
internet trying to get help as this is just a tourist town and even the U=
ni
(James Cook) works with M$. I was very impressed by his tutorial and thou=
ght
he might be able to help me. I can send the PartInfo as attachment or any
other info. Basically it's dual boot with the 32mb (do I need it?) Dell
hibernation primary, XP and Linux with root, swap and home. hda/5 and hda=
/6.
Mandrake went on from the CD but now I have to get the NVIDIA driver
happening. I've got all the rpms and tar files from the NVIDIA site. One =
guy
I read said the rpms wouldn't work under the 2.4 kernel and suggested
compiling from the tarballs. It's the 'White Dog' web site guy...do you k=
now
it?

Anyway, I'm only a newbie and have only unzipped and untarred a file twic=
e
in linux. A friend showed me compiling a kernel and such over many hours =
and
coffees but I'm really stuck now. I want to get the GUI going. What do yo=
u
think? Can you help me?

I want to get my burner, scanner, USB HDD 30gig backup, sandisk (flashcar=
d)
and then some programs. Just a workstation, not going online. And can I c=
ut
out the parts of the kernel I don't need without destroying what I do nee=
d?

Just to get some idea about me, I make carvings. See my site:

Look forward to hearing from you.
