I would do it the other way around i.e check the spec of the monitor and see
if it is supported by Linux. I assume you will be using XFree86 Version 4.
The XFree website has a card list of supported video cards See
http://xfree86.org/cardlist.html. Most reasonably modern monitors support
the VESA standard which will allow a generic driver to support the card.
