SuSE 9.0 is better.  I've never done video editing, but ShefLUG recently did a 
presentation on it:

     A short intro to video editing on GNU/Linux - inc. transfering video
     from camcorder, editing and transferal back to tape or onto storage
       media. Covering applications 'Kino' (for 1394 transfer and basic
           editing) and 'Cinelerra' (for studio quality production).
