Just like to say thanks for all the advice, decided in the end not to kill myself and steer clear off dismantling the whole monitor, although I have had the back off and used an air duster to remove any dust deposits (there wasn't that much to be honest)
Monitor still not happy though, so looks like I'll have to get it looked at professionally. I don't want to scrap it if I don't have to, its a 22" and only 4 years old.
