A bit late for this but might be still of interest. Using K-mail I have
a few filters set up for incoming mail. The first of these strips out
the Spam (well about 95% I suppose) using SpamAssassin and puts it into
a Spam file, which is deleted from time to time. For someone using a
dial up service, this might be better replaced with a routine which
would take spam from the Pop server and avoid the download. I think
that Mailfilter does this but have not used it myself.
After this I have five other filters set up to sort out the mailing list
stuff (including for this one) and this is put into the appropriate
mailing list file, to be read later.
The rest stays for a while in my inbox but any stuff which is suspect
Spam is put manually into a Spam_possibly file which is being built up
to teach SpamAssassin what it should catch in future.
I have files set up for all mail to and from my regular correspondents
and incoming and outgoing mail is manually put in these. There are
other files on Jokes, Purchases and so on. From time to time these and
the mailing lists are weeded and out of date stuff thrown away. Some
mailing list stuff is never read as, for example, the volumes on the
Mandrake Newbie list are getting large and only a small amount is
relevant to me.
As part of my general backup routine, my e-mail files are backed up
about once a week so I can get back stuff deleted in error but that
does not happen very often.
Admittedly, there is a bit of manual intervention in my system but,
then, perhaps I have more time available than many others.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Alan
