[Sderby] modem compatibiltiy

Dear Linux expert

I am an ordinary PC user with limited knowledge who wishes to install a Linux operating system.  I have a cable modem to access NTL service.  A friend of mine who is far more knowledgable than me suggests that there might be a compatibility problem.
Are you able to comment?
