Further to Ashley's reply, most ISP's are O/S agnostic, but don't expect
support if you connect with anything other than windoze and possibly Mac.

If you go with BT, for example, you get a 'free' ADSL modem, usually an
Alcatel. You can use this directly with a firewall such as Smoothwall.
You MUST use a firewall/router or a firewall directly connected to the
ADSL line, within minutes of connecting you will be assaulted by bots
trying to break into your windoze pc.

Having started with the Smoothwall/Alcatel solution I have just installed
a VOIP router, bought from Ebuyer. Its a Zoom X5v and that terminates
the ADSL line and does the firewall bit, it also takes a standard POTS
phone and enables VOIP from the standard phone. Prefixing any number with
a # tells the router to make a VOIP call. I kept the Smoothwall but used
dual Ethernet interfaces instead.

Hope this helps

Roger.
