Overseal school has a Samba file and print server.  Queen Elizabeth Grammar School uses a lot.  The contact for this is Rob Keeling, IIRC.

SuSE or [K]Ubuntu are probably a good choice for the beginner.

Yes, you need a piece of software called Samba.
