I have found exactly the same problem, and the problem I think is that Gnome
does not like it. Mandrake defaults to KDE, as does SuSE, and I've never had
any bother. FC3,4 and Ubuntu do not like it, and they all use Gnome.
As to a solution? The machine that I run Ubuntu on I now use XDMCP and access
the desktop remotely if I have to.
