[Sussex] no sound on my desktop

Can anybody tell me why I have no sound on my desktop.
The sound card (SB512) is definitly configured and working because other
users have sound.
The problem might stem from when I did a reinstall.
/home is on a seperate disk and SuSE would not let me add /home/david
saying directory allready exists so I did not add any users
At first loggin as root I renamed /home/david /home/1david
added user david
deleted the new directory /home/david
then renamed /home/1david /home/david

There's probably a better way but it worked.
Except the sound does not work for me.
