SLUGS,
Inkeeping with the subject du jour Byte have a little article comparing the
performance of LINUX against Mac OS X when being used as a server on Apple's
own XServer hardware.
http://www.byte.com/documents/s=7692/byt1035828368066/1028_bar.html
You'll note from the article than LINUX has been artificially slowed down by
running a KDE session whilst acting as a server - this was done because the
reviewer couldn't shut down the OS X GUI. Even so LINUX still outperformed
Apple on Apple's own hardware.
The reviewer points to a few things about virtual memory and the like. One
point he didn't make (and Steve will back will agree vigourously with this)
is that OS X is a Micokernel architechture (Mach 3) and LINUX is a
Monolithic kernel architecture. In General microkernels are slower than
Monolithic kernels (although this is not always the case).
Anyway - kudos LINUX ;)
