[Sussex] Gnome 2.0 on Solaris

In case you hadn't noticed Sun officially released Gnome 2.0 for Solaris
desktops last night (only around 8 months late I think).

This will now become the standard desktop for all Sun machines including the
low-end Linux based servers and the forthcoming Linux desktop systems.

No matter what Sun's motives (my view is they just see it as a cheap way of
updating an area of their OS that has lagged badly - CDE is, to say the
least, far from intuitive) they are certainly putting some benefit back into
the community.

The Red Hat 8.1 beta (Phoebe) includes quite some number of little additions
to Gnome that have been developed by Sun Microsystems and released as GPL'd
code.

A noteable example is the new Cups based print manager Sun developed. This
meets a need that my colleague Stephen has been asking for in recent weeks -
Drag and Drop printing. The print manager is fully integrated into Gnome 2
and provides such wonders as Drag and Drop printing from the Nautilus file
manager / desktop. The interface to printer administration is a lot like
the "printers" control panel in Windows - no matter how you feel about
trying to copy the look and feel of Windows (the arguement being that just
because most people are used to it, doesn't mean it's optimal) this does
seem to help newbies along.

"There comes a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odorous
that you cannot even tacitly participate. You've got to lay down your body
on the gears and the wheels of the machine. You've got to tell the people
who own the machine and the people who operate the machine that, unless we
are free, the machine will be prevented from operating at all."
