In reality I don't have anything against Perl, I just wouldn't choose to use
it, and I wouldn't advise anyone to learn it unless they wanted to get a job
doing it (because such things exist!).

The whole point of a scripting language is to make simple tasks easy to
automate.  The simple answer is that the syntax and strucuture of Ruby and
Python are easier to learn than Perl - and from my point of view they more
naturally support OO - which is a big advantage when you're doing proof of
concept.
