Common misconception about .NET, I'm afraid. .NET is a framework, not a
language, and I'd say that its only real competitor is J2EE.
Visual Studio is a .NET development tool and is limited to the Windows
platform and three languages (Basic, C++, C#)... well actually, J# is _sort_
of there as well, but let's not go there :-)
The .NET framework, however, is available for a number of platforms,
including Linux, where, as we might hope, it's available open source. Look
at http://www.go-mono.com/ for one solution.
The .NET framework is likewise available for a "large number" of languages.
