SLUGS,

For those of you who get a kick out of / lust after _serious_ hardware, the
latest offering from SGI is now your new official pin up (you can take down
that Sun StarFire 150k poster):

The SGI Altix 3000 is a cluster box in the same vein as the Origin series -
the difference ? Well, Altix is built around Intel Itanium 64bit processors
(up to 64 of these CPU's in each box) and runs LINUX rather than SGI
proprietary UNIX (IRIX).

This is SGI reacting to the market big time - most of their major customers
are moving away from IRIX towards LINUX, so SGI are goiung back to core
competances - they build som seriously powerful kit. Why buy a cluster of
these things instead of just building a Beowulf or OpenMOSIX cluster ? Easy
- the SGI boxes in a cluster have true global shared memory - the
performance gains are huge, plus SGI's graphics hardware is natively
supported by some very cool IO channels - the graphics and sound throughput
of this machine is awesome.

... don't drool on your keyboard ;)

Now if they could just fit one of these on a mini-itx motherboard....
