Geoff,
It may be of little help, but I have not experienced any problems on my
notebook (yup, the one that's for sale) using SuSE distros. I don't often
use vga=ask, but have not had any problems when I do. In addition, any
vga=??? lilo options run fine, vga=792 being the default in SuSE if memory
serves me correctly.
Shall I cut you a set of SuSE 8.1 Pro CDs?

I think there is a problem here. I've read about this before, and its
something to do with apmd.
I can't seem to find mention of it on google though.
The vga=ask affects not only the apmd, but tools like hdparm. Perhaps
there is an option in the apmd config file that will fix the problem.
