Dominic,

I remember that your laptop seems to have a lot of problems with the IDE 
devices.  There is probably some driver that you haven't included or some 
setting that is incorrect which is causing this problem.  Neither of these 
things would trigger any error in kernel compilation. 

As I recall the only bootdisk we could get to use your IDE devices correctly 
was a Debian 2.2 disk - this suggests to me that something has changed in 
later kernels that you need to address.

I assume you kept your old kernel?  If so, reboot, have another go and maybe 
search the web to see if you can find anything out about the motherboard.
