This was the same when I got my modem but my modem didn't even needed
added drivers on Linux, I just plugged it in and used standard serial
port modem communication. I think mainly the problems come when you
go out and buy and internal or USB modem.
The stupid this is windows hasn't got a basic serial port modem
communication driver with it. So you have to either hunt the internet
for one if you don't have one or you lost the disk which invariably
happens.
