I see what you mean, but ping gives you the indication that a connection
has failed, or a machine has hung/in the stages of reboot.

I'd recommend looking at something like mon, or nocol if you want to
monitor services on a machine.

If you are looking for monitoring services internally, you might like to
look at something called Watcher (http://www.i-pi.com/watcher.html). This
is what Demon used to use to monitor disk space, load average and whether
processes were running on all their servers. Anything that failed was sent
via email to the NOC for further investigation.
